Genecom has a core staff of four Business Development officers and works closely with a team of specialist consultants who provide support for the company in areas of development including vaccines, transgenic technologies and enterprise training. Genecom is supported by Laura Kinnear who handles all office administration duties.

Patrick McCarthy PhD
Senior Business Development Manager


Dr Patrick McCarthy is Chief Executive Officer for Genecom Ltd. and was recruited by the Scottish public sector Institutes in 2004 to develop the company with a grant of £800,000 from the UK Office of Science and Technology, Public Sector Research Exploitation initiative and further support of £384,000 from the East of Scotland, European Regional Development Fund. In Q1/2006, Patrick won a further £981,000 in Round III of the Competition and in 2008, a further £1.1 million in Round IV. In the same year, he won £436,000 for Genecom from the Scottish Government through European support.

Patrick co-ordinates the Genecom effort which also includes looking after entrepreneurship training for young scientists under the BBSRC, Biotechnology YES initiative, the Orphans Project and the Genecom Concept Definition Fund for the support of proof of concept studies.

Mark Cracknell, PhD
Manager IP, IAH

Dr Mark Cracknell is responsible for account management at the Institute for Animal Health and is based in Compton. Mark has also a CEIPI qualification in basic European patent law which he uses to support the Institute’s intellectual property portfolio on behalf of Genecom. Mark joined Genecom in November 2005, from working in industry in Europe as a patent specialist. His responsibilities at IAH extend beyond patent protection into business development and the encouragement of scientists to develop early-stage ideas relating to diagnostic tests, vaccines and treatments of animal diseases.

Richard Mole, BSc, PhD
Business Development Manager

Dr Richard Mole shares responsibility for the Moredun account and is looking to work with the institute staff to translate their research output into commercial applications. Richard joined Genecom in 2007 following a period studying for an MBA which included time working with a regional Venture Capital Fund in the East Midlands. Previously, Richard worked for Biotec Laboratories, a company formed from the merger of a University of Nottingham spin out, involved in the development of novel medical diagnostic tests.

Susan McKee
Business Development Manager

Susan McKee shares responsibility for account management at Moredun Research Institute, and provides support at IAH where needed. Susan has several years experience as a Contracts Manager within the pharmaceutical industry. Susan joined Genecom in December 2007 from the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service in Edinburgh and worked previously as a Research Scientist at PPL Therapeutics involved in the characterisation of therapeutic proteins and peptides.
