About Mike
"Mike is one of the world’s top business speakers, a Fellow of The Professional Speakers Association.
He is a very experienced conference facilitator and moderator, having interviewed over 100 top business people, now featured every Saturday in his Financial Times column, “My Business”.
Mike is co-author of several best-selling business books, including The Beermat Entrepreneur and Sales on a Beermat. He is a Visiting Fellow in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at London South Bank University and has made frequent appearances on television and radio.
Mike built and sold his own company in the 80s and worked on seventeen different start-ups in the 90s (two later went public, three went broke!). Mike Southon is now the UK’s leading entrepreneur mentor, and delivers over 100 presentations every year, all over the world".

What do Eric Hunter, Professor Tim Skerry and Dr. John March have in common? All were integral to the creation of high growth start-up businesses, (Edinburgh Robotics Ltd, Medella Therapeutics and Big DNA Ltd) but in very different ways. How did they do it, what was their motivation and what can we learn from them. Find out from Mike when he interviews Eric, John and Tim.
About the Panel
Eric Hunter led a start-up called Edinburgh Robotics Ltd which arose from the School of Bioinformatics at the University of Edinburgh and was CEO from 2005-2007
The firm’s tool kit, dubbed DevBot, was designed to kick-start autonomous robot development programmes - for applications as diverse as lawnmowers, toys, un-manned submarines and flying drones. Eric describes his role in securing potential customers for the company during the very early-stages of growth as crucial to winning investor confidence and winning second round funding of £250,000 from the Alpha EIS Fund managed by Braveheart and participants include Bank of Scotland Corporate, Scottish Enterprise, and Braveheart’s own clients and in giving the company a chance to bring its robot software development kit to market.
Professor Tim Skerry is Professor of Orthopaedic Biology at University of Sheffield. He is also co-founder and CSO of Medella Therapeutics Ltd a spin out supported by Biofusion. Tim graduated as a veterinarian originally and spent several years in clinical practice, before moving into research. Tim became a tenured full professor in <10 years and has held senior positions in the universities of York, London and Sheffield. Together with Dr Gareth Richards he began a programme of research into RAMPs and bone which led to the development of antiRAMP therapies and the first focus on cancer treatment through Medella.
John March is a 'hands-on' CEO and founder of BigDNA Ltd, a company arising from work carried out by John at the Moredun Research Institute.
