The Concept Definition Fund provides small grants for the purpose of:
research and associated costs to demonstrate proof of concept i.e. focused experimentation or prototype development that brings a technology nearer to market.
research with a clear commercial target that falls outside eligibility for grant support or public funding.the identification of commercial possibility, enabling technical or market studies and business planning that help demonstrate the commercialisation route
the promotion and marketing of laboratory resources (for commercial services)
supplementing CASE studentships
securing intellectual property rights (IPR) in particular meeting professional costs associated with applications for an initial patent, Trade Marks and Registered Design Rights
providing travel grants for the attendance of seminars and conferences to meet partners
training associated with innovation and Knowledge Transfer
leverage of matching funds from for example, the Rainbow and Genomia seed corn funds
Grants may sometimes be made for other purposes subject to application
There are no upper or lower limits for funds subject to availability of funding but grants will usually not exceed £25K although in exceptional circumstances, larger grants may sometimes be available.

Check with Genecom (info@genecombio.com) whether your project is eligible (must have industrial application at some point’).
Confirm with your Divisional Head that your employer is willing to accommodate the research. n.b. Genecom will provide direct costs only and not institutional overheads
Discuss your idea. Contact Genecom staff to discuss the idea.
Proposal Preparation. Complete a proposal form (to insert) or write to info@genecombio.com with a letter of support from your Head of Division/Director.
Review and decision. Genecom staff will review your proposal with you and decide whether (i) to recommend an award (ii) to recommend an approach for additional support e.g. from Genomia/Rainbow (iii) to undertake a more in depth review.
Terms and conditions: Awards are offered as non-repayable grants for translational research or to meet costs incurred or as required for the purchase of materials or the engagement of professional assistance and on production of formal invoices
