Reports : Science for Scotland
The Scottish Governments report on Science in Scotland and published in November 2008, sets out the role science plays in helping to deliver benefits across the country and to support growth in businesses in Scotland.
Science helps:
- deliver improvements in public services
- identify strategic growth opportunities for businesses using science to solve problems, develop new products and exceed customer needs
- attract inward investment and provide jobs in sectors that underpin the economy
- find issues to global issues
The visionary document sets out what the Scottish Government will do viz-a-viz:
Developing Individuals
- encouraging more young people to prepare for and to pursue science careers
- make science in schools and colleges more relevant, challenging, interesting and exciting
- improving the match between science course provision and demand
Scientific Research
- Supporting existing and emerging the science infrastructure which underpins Scottish research
- provide an integrated agenda linking strategic research through to science application in government-funded rural, environmental and marine scientific research
- promote growth in medical and related research
- build on the success of research pooling to promote inter-disciplinarity
- enhance links with UK Government, Research Councils and with the EU
Economic and Business Demand
- Prioritise both research excellence and strategic knowledge exchange
- optimise the economic contribution of IP from public-funded research
- encourgae research collaborations between business and academia that focus on growing businesses in Scotland
- Ensure Scotland is well placed to take advantage of emerging science-based market opportunities
- promote overseas investment in the r&d base
- influence the creation of the most appropriate fiscal and taxation regimes to stimulate business innovation and r&d
International
- build on the international profile and wider benefits of the Saltire Prize
- develop the International Lifelong Learning Strategy further
- Strengthen Scotland's international reputation for science
- promote increased science interchange with the EU
Connections in Scotland and in Government
- Increase activity, including themed conferences and smaller events, to promote improved connectivity within cotland
- initiate a cross-cutting review of Scottish Government science and research expenditure to inform the next Spending Review
- improve collaboration and identification of strategic opportunities for key science industry sectors to lead global markets
- continue to develop effective funding and organisational structure
