Biotech Business Skills Workshop - University of Dundee
Well it seemed to go ok; all the students came back the next day! Good degree of interest from the University in Biotechnology YES for this year. Just need to get them talking and into teams. Good to see Wei come all the way from London to take part and to Link in with him and Monika, so must be doing something right. Fantastic enthusiasm for YES from Hosea and his team and grateful for their help on Day 2. Is there really nothing like this in London? If not, I'm sure we can help. Can I look forward to nect year? We'll see.
Biotech Business Skills, University of Sheffield
Unless Survey Monkey lied, the students definitely liked it. Excellent encouragement and enthusiasm from Prof Tim Skerry and some cynicism about fat blokes in a suit from Prof Simon Foster. Must go on a diet before too long! A presentation from Professor John Peberdy MBE on reasons to do YES went down really well and thanks to Tabitha and the guys for going through the pitch again. Too much beer was drunk with Dave Martin on the Monday night and the next night found that the pub at the Station also sells fantastic beer;thanks, James. Already lining up 2011 with Lucy.

Inspiring Innovation
On March 17th, we were pleased to co-host the popular business speaker, Mike Southon, co-author of numerous business guides including the 'Beermat Entrepreneur', the 'Boardroom Entrepreneur', 'Finance on a Beermat' and others, to Moredun. I think that Mike is a great motivational speaker and most of those that saw him agreed with me although the plastic guitar made a few look twice! Mike's first words to me when confronted with "how can I encourage entrepreneurship among our scientists" were "if they don't want to be an entrepreneur, then they don't need to be". He then went on to rehearse his arguments on 'it's the team that matters' introoducing me to his Beermat Cornerstones concept which I'm now happy to share whenever I teach young scientists asking me how they can translate their science into business whilst keeping up the day job? Thanks to Professor Tim Skerry, University of Sheffield and CEO of Medella Therapeutics, the ubiquitous Dr. John March, CEO Big DNA Ltd and Eric Hunter for showing us how different personalities can succedd in the business environment and how they fitted with the roles Mike advocates are important to develop a successful business.
